Inspiration
Jan creates mostly large, semi-abstract, oil paintings. Her work is deeply rooted in and inspired by the English countryside as well as some of the extraordinary places she has visited. In her paintings she aims to convey a pared-down, elemental sense of place and mood – the impressions that linger on in the memory.
Working in oils, Jan sometimes bonds copper, gold, or silver leaf onto sections of the raw canvas for their aesthetic qualities – the specific light they then lend to the finished painting.
As well as being a visual artist, Jan is an award-winning writer. Her published novels are widely available under her pen name: Jan Turk Petrie.
